Learning from one’s Periodic Outreach

Practicing what I preach, I sent a number of email messages out to people on my keep-in-touch list this week. One came back via autoreply, which was so unusual I had to share it.

“Thank you for writing me. I am on retreat for the month of August and not checking email. To keep from freaking out when I return, all my email is being deleted. I will not see what you just sent me. I hope that does not seem rude. I just need a digital sabbatical, to think deeply and write and play!
If you need to reach me urgently, you can call me. Gasp!  XXX-YYY-ZZZZ. Please leave a detailed message.
May you also make time to unplug and recharge.”

Would you have the guts to unplug that much?  I never have — but it was inspirational to read their story!
