The notion of referral commissions has been a longstanding practice in business. Not everyone does it, but here’s how it works in case you’re unfamiliar with the term.

E.g., Jamal owns an office furniture company and Sally owns a printing business. Jamal says to Sally, “let me know when new businesses order stationery — they may need furniture and I’ll pay you 10% if I make a sale”. Often it is a reciprocal relationship.

So what does that have to do with Networking? Well this gentleman has incorporate Referral Commission into his job search — creatively enough to get onto CNN’s 30-Second Pitch!

How can you borrow ideas from other industries or realms to help you move ahead?
